ST. MATTHEW'S CHURCH.
To the Editor of the Waikaeapa Daily. Masterton, Oct. Bth. Sir,-I am glad that my former letter respecting the financial position of this church has elicited from Mr Teakle some explanatory remarks. To a casual observer both accounts as submitted are conflicting and do not, as Mr Teakle remarks, correctly represent the transactions of each year, inasmuch as the balance sheet presented a year ago comprised subscriptions and pew rents for three half years and subscriptions for half a year in advance. It is now to be hoped that the system for the past year, with a nominal list of subscribers, shewing those who have paid and those in arrear, and duly audited by a competent person, will give more satisfaction.
Would it not be worthy of consideration that a finance committee be appointed, who would take entire charge of financial matters, and leave our minister to lift spiritual duties and the care of souls. It is gratifying to find that St. Matthew's Church is self-supporting, and therefore I ft el astonished to find any society, or even personal friends, in England would be led to believe otherwise, and warrant them sending us money for our spiritual wants. If the Episcopalians of Masterton require a place in which to worship Almighty God, they ought to contribute according to their means towards that building, and also to the maintenance of its minister, and not let our friends in England believe we are yet no better than a pauper community,
Hoping our position in this direction next year will lie more satisfactory and that the names of several of our prominent^, members will head old.—lam,
Churchman.
