MASTERTON HIGHWAY BOARD.
A meeting of the Board was held on Saturday, 4th inst. Present—Messrs Bennett (Chairman), Buchanan, Chamberlain, Minchin and Donald. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. The following correspondence was also read Letter from Mr Gossett, calling attention to the slip bars and hand gate between the properties of Messrs McKenzie and Mackay, and requesting that they might bo asked to remove them. One from Clerk of Castle Point Highway Board, stating that that Board had never made any promise to supplement a grant from the Masterton Board towards the deviation of the Upper Taueru. One from W. Morison, informing the Board that a post and rail fence had been erected over the Manaia line of road at Manaia, and requesting that the same might be removed. One from M. Smith as to the state of the road leading to Wainuioru. One from Messrs Holmes, requesting the Board to send its engineer to inspect the line of road laid off by the Government through the Matahiwi property. One from Messrs McLaehlan, Stuckey, and others, requesting the Board to have the road formed on the north aide of the Ruamahunga through the bush leading to the Rangitumau.
One from 0. Pinkerfcon, stating that he intended to press for payment for damage done to a horse through a culvert on the main road in to G Ward having been left open.
One from Mr Payne, asking liberty to erect a gate on No 1 line of road near his section, Upper Plain. One from A. Douglas, asking the Board to lay off a line of road through Messrs Sutherland's property, Upper Pahaua, so that lie might get access to his property. Tenders for the erection of a bridge and approaches in No 6 Ward were received. The Engineer's report was given in and received.
Mr Jagerhorn ittended with reference to metalling the West Mauriceville Road. Messrs Hood and Carman attended as to the different lines of road at Bideford, and at the same time requesting that a. larger staff of men might be employed to remove the slips on the Upper Taueru Road.
Messrs Tankersley and Campbell also attended and objected to the road laid off by the Government engineer through their properties.
The following resolutions were thei passed
That Mr Jagerhorn be requested to write to the Chairman of the West Coun ty and Mr Beetham as to the metalling of the road at Mauriceville.
That Mr Donald see Mr Pinkerton and enquire into the circumstances attending the damage done to his horse. That Messrs Cockburn and Donald be requested to remove the fence erected 011 the road at Manaia, and the stones laid down thereon. _ That the Secretary write to Mr McKenzie, Woodlands, and request him to remove the slip-panels erected on the road near his place, otherwise the Board would take proceedings against him, _ That the engineer attend to the applications of Messrs Holmes and Hunt and report thereon, and also that of Mr Douglas.
Thai M. McKenzie get the old line ol road opened and as soon as the weathei will permit put on a staff of men so as t( get the new road opened with as little delay as possible.
That Mr Buchanan and the overseei attend to Mr Smith's application and ge: the road leading to Wainuioru repaired. That Mr Bremner inspect the proposed lines of road at Bideford and say whicl he considers the best.
That Mr Stuckey ascertain what sum the settlers will subscribe to assist in forming the line of road leading to Rangitumau,
That the clerk see Mr Beard and ascertain if the overseer of works can now remove the fence erected by the natives at Waipopo. That a special meeting of the Board be held on the 11th current, at 10 o'clock a.m., at which the accounts shall be investigated in order that the financial position of each Ward may be shown; That consideration forerection of bridge in No. 6 Ward be postponed till next meeting, The following accounts were passed for payment £ s. d. Wilsone, to pay sundry accounts 15 15 9 J. and H. Holmes, repairs No 2 Ward ■ 2 18 G R. Rowe, repairs No 6 Ward 8 0 0 J, Colway, compensation for land taken 33 0 0
