LOWER WHAREAMA.

[FKO3I OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT! Sept. 30, A meeting of the Petition Committee was held at Tenui on Saturday last. It was decided that the petition should be forwarded to Mr Beetham, M.H.R., by next mail, with a request that he present it to Parliament. Without'exception everyone lias signed the document, showing that all ire unanimous in their desire to get better means of communication. A public meeting is called at Tenui on Saturday, lltli October, to take into consideration the desirability of securing a piece of land nearTenui for a public cemetery. In order to secure the land required the inhabitants will have to subscribe towards the purchase unless some generous squatter will present the district with a couple of acres. Euen then contributions will ba requited to fence the land, etc. The Mungapakeha road still remains-*-impassable, The Road Board, from want : of funds, are unable to clear the slips.'- Ig is said that it will require 'LIOOO to put' this work of folly fit for wheel traffil The Castlepoint road also continues veil bad, so much so that Mr Murray, fro| Ohonga, was unable to travel along f with a mob of sheep last Saturday. M . peity holders must prepare for a hfr</W special rate should we be uvsuccessfu*Lgj getting a grant of money from the Govetfiß inent. Several of the Wards are destitutS of funds now, and there is yet some tityffl to run before next year's rates available, I notice Peter Johnson's contract in the lower part of the Mungapakeha Valley it drawing near completion. Some large slips have occurred at Sugar Corner, and to all appearances the formation across the valley above Gibson's bridge stands every chance of being washed away by the first heavy flood. Some people here (" unprofessional") say that a mistake has been made in taking the road round Sugar Corner at all. It certainly looks very much as if it would nearly all slip into the creek. The Race Committee, at a meeting held same few weeks back, made Mr W. Johnson an offer to rent the racecourse on the Toi Flat. It is to be hoped this offer will meet with success, for it would secure to the public one of the best courses in the Wellington district. Mr McHutchon's temporary hotel at Whakataki was opened on Saturday last. Travellers will find this a convenience. I feel sure all in the district will wish the proprietor success in his new undertaking, and no doubt when the new building is erected a good business will be done.
