(from our own correspondent.) October Ist, 1879. I scarcely know where to commence to gather a few fragments together in the shape of news. In a district like this where settlers are so few and so scattered news is generally scarce. The weather for the last week has been very changeable, when in hopes of the roads improving we have had heavy rain, making matters nearly as bad as ever, so it will be a matter of time before regular traffic can be expected. To give an idea of the state of things m that direction, I may state that Mr Murray arrived at Belliss' station, Tinui Valley, on Saturday, with 500 fat sheep from Armstrong's station, Akiteo, en route for Masterton. On seeing tho state of the roads, he determined to return by the ship to Akiteo rather than risk considerable loss. Rumor has it that the new hotel is tobe built opp-site Sutherland's store, but reports are so contrary that no reliance can be placed on them. . I notice the price for shearing is being brought down to 17s Cd doubt this will keep pace with the lOfek of wool, although it will be a source of «|p satisfaction to the shearers, but consider-' ing the depressed state of things in general, it is a fair price. I see that Host Donecker, of old fame, is now superintending the Whakataki temporary hotel business, and there is no doubt a welcome will be afforded to those patronising this establishment. lam informed that it is the intention of the proprinter to erect a handsome hotel on this property. The Club Hotel, at Cashpoint appears to be doing a fair business, and well it may, for a better conducted house is not often found, all comforts pertaining to home are to be found at this establishment, and those seeking health at the sea- A side will find every comfort at this ho * tel. The quarterly meeting of the Licensing Court came off yesterday, but nothing of importance transpired, Bus'ine«on hand
