CARTERTON.
[mom OUll OWN correspondent]
September 17th. The volunteers mot last night and were put through the manual and platoon exercises. Thirty-two members answered to the roll, Captain Snodgrass being the only officer hi attendance. Prior to dismissal he informed tho corps that-next Tuesday would be the first monthly parade, and urgod those present to be in attendance and-to get absentees to put in an appearance. He also informed the members that the Government contemplated by a letter he had received from Colonel Reader, having the colors of the line (scarlet) as a uniform for the corps throughout the colony, and as ho thought the corps would get this cloth quicker than the blue originally proposed, suggested that the corps at once decide to go in for the scarlet. After the drill there was- some very pretty play with the gloves between some of the Greytown men and our confreres on drill; and the single-sticks were by no means conspicuous by their absence. Considering that the company have only had two drills since they obtained their rifles, they did credit last night alike to their able instructor, Sergeant-Major Campbell, and themselves, by the smartness and precision with which they carried out the instructions given. I forgot to mention yesterday that the operettas the FPrences will give on Thursday evening are "Spoiling the Broth," an Angliciza edition of La Rose D'Auvergne, and ''Breaiing the Spell." If the lovely weather wo have had for some time past continues, I think they can rely on a very good house.
