MASTERTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The usual fortnightly meeting of the above was held in the Council Chambers lastiiightat7.3op.nl, Present: His Worship the Mayor, Crs Renall, Gupper, Wuoclroofe, Gray, Russell, and Vile. Messrs Bish and McCardle, the newly elected councillors, on making the usual declaration, took their seats. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and enfinned. CORHESPONDENCE.—INWAKDS. Letter from Sergeant McCardle re Government cottages, and handing over the same. One from Treasury re fines. One from i . Brown re Town Hall. One from Marton Borough Council re copy of rules, One from Mis Hacker re roads in Keaton Estate. One from A. R. Bunny re Wesleyan Church reserve, The application of Mr J, Brown to have the Town Hall licensed was referred to the City Surveyor and, if suitable, license to be granted, Cr Renall moved, seconded by Or Gapper—That this Council having taken into consideration Mrs Hacker's request to have the value of the acre given by her
to the Council spent on the Keaton Estate roads, recommend Mrs Hacker to sell the property herself arid-then they would supplement the amount.-out' of any funds at their disposal and spend' same on the property. Or Renall thought this opened a verj serious question. They were now finding out that the present rates would no' suffice for all their roads, and that tin question would have to be seriously deal with." Cr McCardle thought if they couli spend £ls or £2O on the Keaton property it would satisfy Mrs Hacker. He would therefore move as an amendment—That the matter be left to the Works Committee. The amendment was seconded by Cr Blah. Cr Gapper said the matter had been brought up before. They had no money to do work with, Ihe original motion was put and carried, The question referred to in Mr A. R. Bunny's letter was referred to the Finance Committee.
Finance Report. The Finance Committee recommended the following accounts for payment : Wages and contingencies .. £29 9 5 J. PaytonA Co., advertising .. 214 0 W. 11. Smith, printing .. .. 37 6 11. Wilsone, account returning officer 24 17 6 F. Gray, repairs 2 8 G R. Burrctt, stationery .. .. 48 9 W. Cullen, on account Makora Bridge .. 21 1 0 Maries ' ~ 15 7 4 The present overdraft was reported to be £7Ol 18s 3d, less the sum of £ls, amount of rates collected that day. Overseer's Report. The Overseer reported all the contracts completed, except one in south end of Chapel-street, of seven chains formation. Since last meeting a culvert had been put in at the top of King-street, so as to connect that street with Queen-street, and filled up level, Masonic-Rtreet would in a day or two be completed; and about ten more chains, of broken stone would be required fa repairing the Upper Plain road.
Works Committee Report, The Works Committee reported that all the contracts were completed except a small one in Chapel-street, They recommended that tenders be called for the main road through Kuripuni, in sections, for formation and metalling. They also recommended that the Government cottage* be put in a thorough state of repair, two of the buildings at the back be removed in ut line with the others, and the whole to be subdivided with fences ; and Hope-street, on which they abut, be put in order. Estimates had not been prepared, the Committee preferring to leave that over to this meeting, Cr Vile moved, seconded by Or McOardle—That plans and specifications of the forty chains formation of Kuripuni road be laid before the Council before accepting lenders,—Carried. Cr Vile moved, and Cr Gray seconded— That the matter of the immigrants cottages be left to the Works Committee to prepare specifications of the work, and report on same at next meeting,—Carried, Notice of Motion. Cr Gapper gave notice that he would move at the next meeting—That all public and private roads in the Borough be defined. The Council then adjourned,
