THE PUKEHANGA OUTRAGE.
MEETING OF THE COUNCIL OF TRIBES. Giuhami 3TOWN, Tuesday. The meeting of the tribes of Hauraki to inquire into the shooting was resumed at Ohinemuri this morning, in the presence of the offenders and tribe. A pigeon message to thejThames Advertiser, reports Tamiha, the young man who pointed out the boundary to the survey party, was examined, He deposed that his tribe were the sole mm of the Pukehanga Block. At the time lie did not know that there was any danger from the Ngatihakos He had informed two of the belligerent hapus that it was the intention of the Ngatihakos to have the land surveyed, and one of them said : "You are quite right, boy, .the Ngatihakos originally owned the land." Mr G. T. Wilkinson asked whether he had stated m his evidence on Saturday last that tho Ngatihakos owned land southward of the Pukehanga, Tamiha addmitted that he had said so, Mr Wilkinson then asked him whether he was aware that the Ngatihakos had made the survey of it, to which he replied in the affirmative. Another question was whether the Ngatilukos interfered with the survey. Tamiha said they had quietly sent the surveyors back. Mr Wilkinson also asked whether the witness thought there was any necessity to shoot one of the Ngatihako surveyors because the ownership'" to the block happened to be disputed. Tamiha said his tribe would not act that way.
In answer to another question, witness the Native Lands Court, we always gain our cases against the Ngatihakos, but so.nctimea they go into the Crown Grants with us."
The witness was then cross-examined by Epiha, rmc of the would-be assassins, as to the ownership of the land in question.
_ It was thought on Saturday that a decision would be arrived at to-day, but from present appearances the meeting is not likely to end for three or four days more, The runangas make exceedingly slow progress, each question and answer occupys about five minutes. Messrs Puokey and Wilkinson will be examined to-morrow. Young Snodgrass, who rode from Pareora to Grahamstewn with the news of the outrage has been rewarded for his services by being placed in the mounted constabulary at Wellington.
