The usual fortnightly meeting of the Masterton Borough Council takes place this evening.
Mr 0. R. Carter invites the electors to meet him at the Institute, Masterton, tomorrow evening.
An open Lodge meeting of thel.O.G.T of Masterton will be held in the Foresters Hall, this evening. The programme will consist of songs, addresses, and recitations.
Notico is given that the competition for scholarships under the Education Board of tins District is open for girls as well as for boys, Notwithstanding the inclement weather, there was a crowded attendance at the Town Hall, last night'to witness Gainer's Diorama of the American War. The fight between the Kearsage and Alabama, and the other scenes were magnificently painted, A large number of valuable prizes were given away at the close of the performance, the winners of the principal being: E.P. tea and coffee service, Mr Jacobsen of the Alexandra Boarding-house, and the silver watch by' Fred,' at the Club Hotel. The ploughing match between Messrs Cresswell and Heggie, was held yesterday afternoon in Mr Meredith's paddock. Upper Plain, and resulted in favor of Cresswell. The Judges were, Messrs Gappper, Baumber, and J. Morris, and the following were the points to decide upon; —Depth and uniform width, equal; straightnesa of ploughing, equal; solidity of work. Cresswell; covering in vegetation, Cresswell; evenness of crest of furrow, Cresswell; best feering and finish, Cresswell. Cresswell used a Duncan plough, Heggie a Reid and Gray. meeting of the members of the Greytown Cricket Club, was held at the office of Mr W. G. Beard, on Friday evening last, at Bp. in. There was a good number present. Mr W. G. Beard was voted to the chair, Mr Tully was re-elected President, and Mr Russell vice-President, Mr E. 0. W. Porter was appointed Secretary and Treasurer. It was resolved that the Captain be elected on the field for matches and Mr Ronaldson was elected a practice Captain, The following Committee were then elected Messrs McGuire, Ronaldson, McFenzie, AV. G. Beard, C. Beard, F, O'Connor, Gregg, and Salmon. The following to form a Match Committee:— j Messrs McGuire, Ronaldson, and McKenzie, Messrs Cuff and Salmon were appointed as representatives to the Cricket Association, The Treasurer read a statement of accounts showing a credit balance of £l2/18/5, Mr Ronaldson reported that Mv Stewart was willing to let his paddock for six months for £2. It was resolved to accept his offer, Messrs Porter, Gregg and O'Connor were appointed a ground Committee. It was resolved that the fiist matched be played on September 27th bethe letters A. and K. and L. and Z. A vote of thanks was passed to the Chairman for the use of his office. The next meeting was fixed for September 18th, Mr Beard promised a bat to the best average scorer, and Mr Bock a ball to best average bowler.
Mr Beetliam meets the electors at Carterton this evening, while Mr Bunny addresses them at Greytown.
The celebrated Russo-Turkish War dioranni is to be presented at the Town Hall, Masterton, this evening, for the first time. There will be an afternoon exhibition to-niorrow.
We have received a letter signed' Scandinavian," evidently written by a correspondent who recently favored us under another name. We have a great pleasure in publishing all genuine letters, but we require to be satisfied of the good faith of those who contribute to our columns.
At a public meeting held at Tinui, it was resolved on Saturday last, that the attention of candidates should be called to the desirability of visiting the electors there on their own ground. An advertisement to this effect appears in another column, We would suggest that all the candidates should go together to Tinui on the same day in order to make a really good meeting in that district. The annual meeting of the Greytown Horticultural and Industrial Society was held in the Town Hall, on Saturday afternoon. There was a very fair attendance, Mr Maxton being voted to the Chair. The minutes of the last annual meeting were read and confirmed, It was reported that the Society not having received the support expected, had not been able to quite clear expenses, but the debt owing, was a small one. It was resolved on the motion of Mr Braitiiwaite, seconded by Mr Barnard " That J. P. Russell, Esq., be asked to act as President." It was resolved that Messrs Kempton, sen., and H. H. Jackson bo Vice-Presidents. Mr Webster was appointed Secretary and Mr Barnard as Treasurer. The following Committee were elected.—Messrs Brooks, T. Kempton, jun.,l), Barratt, W, G. Beard, Cuff, Maxton, E. Dunn, Bock, Braitiiwaite, Porritt, J. Hollard, G. Hollard, F. H. Wood, J. O. Bidwill, D. McMaster, Coleman Phillips, W. Booth, sen,, A. Wilkinson, J. Gurr, and J. G, Cox, It was decided to hold two shows during the year, —one in December, and one in February. The next meeting of the Committee was fixed for Saturday, September 13. A vote of thanks to the Chairman concluded the business.
