GREYTOWN BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The adjourned meeting of the Council was held on Monday evening. Present—Crs Udy, (in the chair), Gallagher, Grey, R. Y. Smith, Barnard, Kempton. and Fuller. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed, CORRESPONDENCE—OUTWARDS. To Bank of New Zealand, leturning orders drawn by T. Frethey. Inwards, From the Wairarapa Institute, asking that the rates be remitted—From Hospital re amount of subsidy due.—From the Minister of Public Works stating that it had never been contemplated to remove

the Public offices. From the Chairman of Wairarapa West Council re subsidy.— From G. Beetham, stating that subsidies be paid immediately upon an. authority from the West Council, and that an

amount of £IOOO had been placed on the Estimates for the Greytown Branch Rail-way.-From T. Frethey, stating that his accounts were rendered in proper form, and that he must insist on them being paid.

Mr Frethey's account. Mr Frethey was asked to explain an «j account of £7 7s. Mr Frethey explaine' ™ that the amount was authorized by a committee; he had submitted the account to the Committee and it had been approved. After a great deal of discussion, Or Gray asked Mr Frethey who he would have looked to if the Borough had not been formed, Mr Freethey stated ho would have looked to the Committee. It was resolved on the motion of Or Gray, seconded by Or R V. Smith, that Mr Frethey's charge of £7 7s be referred to a solicitor for advice, to test the legality of the Council paying it, and that the otheramountbe paid, on being passed by the Finance Committee.

Or R. V. Smith moved, and Or Gray seconded, that the rates be remitted, as a donation to the Institute.

Or Kempton moved as an amendmont that the amount be not remitted as the Council were not in a position at present. The amendment was put to the meeting and was carried by 4 to 2. It was resolved that the overseer and poundkeeper be instructed to furnish the Council with monthly repot ts, Cr Kempton mentioned the advistbility of constiucting a foot way at South Greytown.

It was resolved that the matter be referred to the Committee and to report at next meeting. Tho Town Clerk was requested to ascertain the cost of lamps for the main street. The meeting then adjourned.
