FEATHERSTON HIGHWAY BOARD.

The above Board met at the Institute, Greytown, on Saturday last, when there were present Mr John 'fully (Chairman), and Messrs Jss. Donald, H. H. Jackson, A, Matthews, and Coleman Philips, Wardens, The minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed, and the Treasurers report was laid upon the table shewing receipts amounting to £662/5/11 during the past month and made up as follows: £ a d From Rates 331 1 3 Rent of Waihenga tollgatc ... 33 6 8 Wairarapa West County balance of subsidy for quarter ending June 57 18 0 The same subsidy quarter ending September 230 0 0 The same for survey of roads through lands, crown grants, of which have not matured 30 0 0 It was also stated that the total amount of rates now collected for the current year was £1452 lGs lid, and the amount outstanding £13613s Id. Accounts were then presented amounting in the aggregate to £25519s 6d, and the Engineer read his report on the works. Mr Donald brought under the notice of the Board the advisability of employing broad tired carts only for the maintenance of roads and was warmly supported in his proposal by the Chairman. It was then resolved that notice be given that the Board will not after the expiration of three months employ carts having wheels fitted with tires of a less width than five inches. * In the meanwhile the Engineer was instructed to pay a higher rate of wages to cartmen, who at once will comply with this regulation than to others. The correspondence consisted of the following : 1. Letter from Mr Duncan Cameron urging the construction of a horse track to Pahau. 2. do. Provincial Auditor asking for statement of account. 3. Do. MrW. Wratten asking that a road be surveyed to his property. i. Do. Mr Lot Cross asking permission to erect a gate on the road, 5. Do. Mr Tlios. Ward cantended that the quantity of land taken from him was more than computed by the Board's Engineer. 6. Do. Petition from Messrs Yule and others asking for alterations in the contract for road construction at South Featherston, j Mr Cross was granted permission to erect a gate as requested subject to existing regulations and also subject to instant removal whensver required.

The Board determined that the Engineer should traverse a liorso track to Pahau as soon as tlio s cason permits, and report to the Board. The Chairman was requested to inspect Ward's land with a view of settling the dispute about the quantity of land taken from him. Tlio Engineer was instructed to lay off a road from the Lower Yalley road to Mr Wratten's land as early as possible. The Board did not think it desirable to alter the South Fcathcrston contract as it is now in full progress and an alteration „ had already been made which would substantially meet the case, jijjt was decided at once to put a sufnumbor of hands on the road between Greytown and Tauhcrenikau to remetal the road before the spring. The position of the Waihenga Hotel and toll-gate was then discussed, it being tlio opinion of the Board that the rent ol i the house should be paid over to it, in J order to provide for the maintenance of the Waihenga Riding and approaches. The Clerk was accordingly directed to make applications to the Government to that effect, and the meeting terminated,
