CARTERTON.

[from OCR OWN corresfoneent] July 28th. The week in our midst has been dull, and \ void of any exciting incident. The weekly \ drill of the Volunteers took place on Tuesday. Captain' Snodgrass Sub-lieutenant Ward and 37 rank and file being in attendance. Now that the preliminary drill has been fairly progressed with. I would urgently suggest the expediency of dividing those who are thoroughly well up in their drill, from those who are not, as the defects of the latter materially interfere with the efficiency of the former. The targets are to be removed to the new range this afternoon; it is situated at the Taratahi, on White's line. A finer site could hardly have been chosen, as it is no great distance from the township, and there is a clear range of over 800 yards, and scarcely any - scrnb to be cleared. _ The advocates of the Borough do not intend to let the motion die without a struggle, as they intend petitioning His Excellency the Governor to appoint a Commissioner to inquire into the matter, as it is believed the counter-petition can be immolated with no great difficulty. A meeting oj the vestry of St. Luke's Church took place on Thursday evening, mainly to arrange for the reallotment of pews, which had become necessary, owing to the change of position of the choir.
