CARTERTON.

(FkOM OUR OWN CoKKESroSDENT.) June 14,1879.

The anti-Boroughites have at last gotto work, a counter-petition against the formation of the district into a Borough being now taken round for signature, The main causes specified for objection are, that there are not the requisite number of resident householders in the district, and that many of the signatures were obtained to the original petition m consequence of erroneous statements made by one of the canvassers.

Petty plundering has bcori rife in fhe district during tho last week. Potatoes and garden implements havo been stolen on the Taratahi, and in other cases articles of clothing left out at nighttime havo disappeared before the rightful owneis were abroad in the morning. The repairs to tho road are progressing well, having reached Mr Feiiton's hotel, and I understand the work is to bo continued uninterruptedly to the sand pit on the Taratahi.

The covering to the drain in front of the Marquis of Normanby Hotel is in a very precarious state, and whatever body is the 0110 to see after such matters ought to have it looked to speedily, or we shall have a serious accident occurring. The Clareville School Committee meet for general business on Monday evening at the School-house.
