MASTERTON SCHOOL COMMITTEE.

The usual monthly meeting of the above Committoe was lielcl yesterday afternoon. Present —Messrs Foist (chairman), Vile, McKco, Wrigley and Payton. The minutes of tho last meeting wore road and confirmed. KDIUFUNI SCHOOL. [ The petition of tho Kuripuni settlers for a school was referred to tlio Committee by tho Education Board. j Tho'Chairman thought it not desirable to establish another school in tlio distriot. -

Mi' Pilkington, in answov to the Olnurman, reported that tlio Borough School was not overcrowded.

Mr Pay ton thought that tlio distance of tho proposed sohool from tho Borough school, 111 miles, was fatal to tlio proposal. It was resolved on tho motion of Mr Vilo—That tho Committee could not recommend tho Board to give cfl'oct to tho petition. BEUIIHTAItY. Tho Chairman stated that tlio Secretary dosirotl to rosign, as ho could not convoniontly attend to Jiis duties. At tho request of Mr McKoe tlio consideration of tho resignation was hold over till tho question of whether future meetings should be hold m tho afternoon or evening was decided. . TEEASOIIEII's 11E PORT, Tho Treasurer reported the balance to tho credit of the Committeo to bo £22 18a Bd. ASSISTANT TEACitBK. Mr Pay ton understanding that Mr Gordon was about to resign liis appoint- ] mont, and that Mrs Palmer was applying for it, thought it wonld be as well the the Committee to express an opinion on tho subject. He considered that it would bo to tho interest of the school to secure Mrs Palmer's services. , Mr Pilkington, the head-master reported that he had authority from Mr Gordon to say that that gentlemen, if he were not removed by the .Board to another school, intended at the close of the current quarter to resign from tlio Board's service. The Rev. J. McKoe considered that an efficient master was of greater service to a school than an efficient mistress, and for this reason could not support Mrs Palmer, Ho thought there were already too large a proportion of female toachors in tho school.

Mr Pilkington being referred to, thought a mistress would bo more useful to the school than an assistant master. It was resolved 011 tho motion of Mr Pay ton, seconded by Mr Brown- —That tho Committco having been informed tiiat Mr Gordon will not continue his present appointment after thecurrontquartcr, rcspoctfnlly recommend tho Board to appoint Mrs X'almer to tho school," Mr Vile and tho Chairman speaking in favor of tho resolution. HCHOiAKiSHIP. . Tho Rov. J. McKoe moved a resolution in favor of obtaining from the Town Trustoes a grant of £25 to found two scholarships, orio of £ls and another of £lO, and speaking strongly in its favor. A general opinion was expressed that the financial position of the Trust at tho present time would make tho application inopportune, but on the understanding that tho Tequest was not immediately made to tho Trust, tho resolution was carried, COMTtTLHORY CLAUSES OF THE ACT. A discussion on this subject was postponed till the next meeting. TIME OF MEETING. The Rev, J. McKee moved —That for the future the Committee should meet at 7.30 instead of 3 p.m., but after some discussion the motion was negatived. VACANCY. Mr McCardle was elected to fill the vacant seat on tha Committee, on the motion of Mr McKee, seconded by Mr Vile'. ACnOTJNTS. Tho following accounts were passed for payment :—J. G. Rockel (dividing fence), £2 15s ; Pickering, repairs, £2 5s ; cleaning school, £11*23. VISITING MEMBEK. Mr Vile was appointed visiting member for the ensuing month.
