This morning a young man named Michael O'Neill was drowned while bathing on the beach by the bluff. He was one of the immigrants ex City of Auckland, and was employed by Pat-ick Hayden as carter. Deceased and Hayden were walking on the beach below the bluff shortly after ten o'clock, when deceased, remarking about the heat, said he would go for a swim. Hayden walked round the point, and on coming back saw O'Neill bathing, his clothes lying on tho beach. There was 110 unusual surf, and he was in no apparent danger, standing not quite up to his middle in the water as tho wayes receded, and attempting to swim as they rose. Hayden beckoned to him to come ashore, but as O'Neill paid no attention to the sign, he walked on. A few minutes afterwards lie was met by a man from the hill, who asked him if the man was not drowning, They turned back, and there was no sign of deceased. The only spectators of tho accident appear to havo been some boys on the bluff above, who at once gave the alarm, They say that deceased suddenly vanished and did not rise again, It has been suggested that he was seized by a shark; but this is only conjecture. Sergeant O'Malley obtained the services of the prisoners to examine the beach, and thoao who could swim ivent out in'search of the body, but met with no success, Very slight expectation of tho recovery of the body is entertained. Deceased ivas a fine, promising young man between 18 and 19 years of age, and of steady habits, He had no relatives in the colony. }
