Shortly after Hermoine came into .port' Captain Robinson placed one .of his crew very ill in the Hospital Seaman not having recovered during the vessels stay, Captain wants to leave the man still in the Hospital but to this objection been raised on the ground that the man is only .a burden on the country as the Captain refuses to provide for the man in any other way any inquiry will shortly be held into circumstances of the case. COMPLAINTS AGAINST POLICE AUTHORITIES. _ Complaints appear in the Press of. the difficulty of obtaining information from the local police authorities. CHARITABLE AID QUESTION. The City Council will this evening consider the adviaableness of forming a Charitable Aid Committee. FREE PUBLIC LIBRARY, The question of establishing a free public library is warmly supported by the Press. UNWHOLESOME BREAD. Complaints are being made regarding the unwholesome quality of some of the bread retailed here. • BENEVOLENT INSTITUTION. The Benevolent Institution complain of being short of means, owing to subscriptions coming in slowly. ATTEMPTED RAPE, _ Auckland, Wednesday. At the Police Court this morning, Nel: son' Ireland',- charged with attempted rape on his own daughter, a child of 8 years of age, Sub-Inspector Pardy said it was one worst cases he had to deal with remanded on application of Police till Friday.

Theßay of Plenty Times give additional particulars with reference to the attempt to raise the Taupo. Captain Worsp, in the diver,s dress, gallantly descended the after hold to inspect the leak. He found the fracture extended about two feet six inches each way. A couple of flour bags were rolled up in a blanket and. laid on the spot, the whole being covered with canvas and blankets, One end section of the largo piping belonging to the big pump was then boarded over and placed up-right on this, and forced down on to it with a screw-jack. This was found to act admirably, and the pumps were gaining rapidly on the water, though not in such a perfect manner as in Captain Worap's judgment would have authorised his floating her there and then. The diver descended again to investigate, and discovered that the fracture was only partly covered, so the whole apparatus was yesterday taken down again and more flour ■bags and blankets laid down. RETURN OF THE CHAMPION.
Gkahamstown, Tuesday. The carbine champion, Gordon, of the Thames Navals, returned this afternoon by the steamer Rotomohana, with ten other Thames men, and was received by a parade of volunteers; to the number of about four hundred strong, The town was decorated in some of the leading ..thoroughfares, and the champion was chaired by liis comrades, and conveyed along the wharf to the place appointed for an address of welcome by his Worship the fylayor. W, Binney this afternoon a statement was read showing his liabilities at £4058 ; deficiency, £1594, Heattributed his failure '.to'the loss of the Geelong and to timber speculations. . He offered 10s. in the £. Much sympathy'was expressed with' hini by most of his creditors .present, all but two being, in favor of accepting the composition. Mr Kissling, of the Bank, of New Zealand, proposed a complete assignment of the estate. Two creditors offered a guarantee of 10s. The meeting adjourned till to-jnorrow. -
