(PISJI KRESS AGENCY.) Wellington, Wednesday. THE PUBLIC ACCOUNT. The Gazette to-day publishes the receipts and expenditure of the public account for the quarter ending 31st December, 1878. The total receipts amount to £4,572,219; total expenditure, £4,738,018. It included (£SOOO unauthorised land revenue. Receipts, £322,901, as against £388,714 in September quarter. Total receipts of Public Works Fund from Ist July to 31st December, £1,383,203; payments, £592,151. HOW THE WORK GOES ON. A series of athletic sports have just concluded between the Treasury and Audit Departments. The Audits won the ride, cricket, and tug-of-war matches. PRIVATE BANQUET TO HIS EXCELLENCY, The members of tho Wellington Club have invited tho Governor to a farewell dinner. His Excellency has accepted the invitation. SYDNEY EXHIBITION. Government have placed £2OOO at the disposal of the Sydney Exhibition Commissioners, as first contribution. KAPAI JACOB JOSEPH. Since tho opening of the Tramway 38,744 persons have used it, and each of the engines have travelled 0,000 miles. It is proposed by the Tramway Co, to retain £l per month from the wages of the guards and drivers, as security for damages the Company may have to pay for accidents. The present month has been the worst known in and around Oluistchurch for sickness and deatii. Up-to the present time over 90 deaths have been registered,' the average mortality being 50. It is known that several have not been registered.
, Invercakgill, Tuesday. THE TOKOHE. A curiosity of native history was discovered on the banks of the Mararoa River about a week since. It consisted of a bird closely resembling the tokolie, or, as Dr Baker describes it, iiotonoirs. The bird, which had apparently been killed by rabbiting dogs, is in good preservation, and'is in the possession of Mr Connor, manager of Captain Henkinson's station, This bird belongs to a class only two specimens of which have been discovered in the world, and they are in the British Museum.
