A COMPLAINT.
| To Hit. Editor of tk Wairakapa Daily, Masterton, Jan, 23,1879. Silt,—l wish to call your attention to the manner in wliich travellers are imposed upon'at the various ferries or tollgates on the road between here and Palmcrston North. I hear that one poor fellow was stuck up by the natives, and had his swag taken from him, because he could not pay them the Is 3d demanded. I came through both the rivers on my horse without any assistance, and had to pay Is at each, which, added to the toll at the Gorge Bridge, makes 2s 4d, and I think it would bo rather hard on : poor wayfarers who could not afford it. At the gate, where the Maoris demanded a ' bob' I and my horse were beseiged .by a mob of pig dogs, and it was anything but pleasant to have to dismount and untie a rope from the gato and tic it up again with tlio dogs yelping and snarling all round me ; and then when I got on the horse to resume my journey_a mob of natives appeared and rather insolently demanded the 'bob.' Of course, though exceedingly irritated, I paid it, as the time was of consequence to me. Hoping you will, mention this in your valuable journal, allow me to subscribe'myself yours, &c., George Oorneiius Bees.
