THE WAIMATE ADVERTISER SATURDAY, JANUARY 21, 1905. GRAY’S CORNER SCHOOL.
In Tuesday’s issue we stated fully the case’ for the erection of a school at Gray’s Corner, Waikakahi„ Noticing that this question was not reported as being discussed at last meeting of the Board, a representative of this paper waited bn the Rev George Barclay, a member of the Board, to try and obtain information. He was told that tha Gray’s Corner question came up in connectionjvith the delimitation of the school. Next (<>Yi Mr Barclay’s motion).there was read a letter from the Department stating that a petition had been reeceived in Wellington, but they did not forward the petition, and as the Board had no copy, there was a deadlock. For ourselves we think it is a great pity that a matter of such urgency as facilitating the education of fifteen to twenty children cannot be arranged for with less reluctance and delay. We notice that the Board, in common with Other Boards throughout the colony, is at loggerheads with the Minister of Education in regard to the supply of school buildings, but surely the local Board, notwithstanding the petty frivolous tangle of departmental regulations, could see its way to incur a responsibility of £lOO and provide the modest accommodation asked for, particularly when the parents concerned are behaving so generously. It will be a question by and by whether the greatest obstacle lies in the Department or the Education Board, but we hope the latter will see its way speedily to assert its authority and meet the just desires Of the people.
