The Tuapeka Times says that it is proposed to bring the hotelkeepers of the Tuapeka electorate together in Lawrence for the purpose of discussing the best means whereby the licensing laws may be observed and the interests of the owners of licensed houses thus protected in the future. Circular letters have been addressed to the owners of all hotels in the electorate, and the date of meeting has been fixed for Thursday, 11th inst, in the Lawrence Borough Council Chambers. It is intended to invite the clergymen of all the local churches to be present.” A SOUTH AFRICAN MEDAL. A second South African war medal, bearing the effigy of His Majesty the King, is to be granted “to those soldiers who, by their long services in the field, have brought the war to a successful termination.” This medal is to be known as the “ King’s South African Medal,” and the ribbon will be orange, white and green, in three stripes of equal width. To obtain this medal men must have been actually serving in South Africa on or after January 1, 1902, and on that date must have completed eighteen months’ war service, or subsequently completed such service before June 1, 1902. In other words, no claim will be good for service commenced subsequent to January 1, 1901. It is estimated that only the members of the first five contingents from New Zealand will be able to claim the medal.
