About 600 railway employees have been dismissed as a result of the drought in Australia.

In connection with the increase in the price of bread it has been decided to form a co operative bakery at Gisborne.
During Monday and Tuesday over a ton of fresh fish was landed in Waimate and the bulk of it cleared. That total is “ not so fishy.”
The Elingamite enquiry still .drags on its weary length. The evidence is simply a repetition of the story told after the wreck.

Last evening the "Waimate Rifles paraded in good strength under Captain Barclay and Lieut. Jackson. Sergt.-Major Jones was in attendance and put the company through field work in preparation for to-day’s outing.

A man jumped off Auckland wharf the other day. He told the Court subsequently that he did it to freshen himself up aft?r a fit of indigestion. He had to find a surety for £lO that he would not have another attack of indigestion for six months.
Yesterday before Messrs G. H. Graham and R. Nicol, J’sP. a Waimate resident was convicted and fined Is with 7s costs for leaving a cow in the saleyards without being milked, A prohibition order was then granted against a Waimate resident.
The expenses of the New Zealand tour of Lord Hawke’s cricket team are expected to tot up to .£2,500, and as the members are amateurs and do not receive pay, the Government has agreed to make a merely nominal charge for their railway fares throughout the colony.
Dr Sven Hedin, the famous explorer, has arrived in England, after traversing 6000 miles of unexplored Asia. He suffered terrible hardships in high altitudes, and lost many members of his expedition in the Gobi desert. Two attempts to reach Lhassa failed. Dr Hedin was arrested when within one day’s ride of the city.
Advices have been received that the New Guinea natives are troublesome, and that they recently ambushed a party of 32 officers and men ; killed one soldier, and wounded several others. Five natives were killed and a number wounded in the affray. Two gunboats with a strong force have been sent to punish the natives. The effect of prohibition on the wine industry of New Zealand was briefly discussed at a conference of Auckland fruitgrowers. It was pointed out that the carrying of prohibition would under the present law prohibit the sale of light New Zealand wines, and a motion was passed expressing the opinion that New Zealand wines ehould be sold in all restaurants free of license.
Agnes Russell Reid, of Dunedin, deserves to have a statue erected in her honour as the first woman on record who wished to be older than she really is. Being desirous of taking a part in determining the fate of the country, Agnes, who lacked three months of the age, enrolled herself as an elector. It has coR her £5 Is, as a warning not to do it again. However, there is not much danger of that.

His Loidship Bishop Grimes laid the foundation atone of a new C atholic Church at b't. Andrews on Sunday. The rite of blessing and laying the stone was gone through (after ihe prescribed manner, before a large gathering of people. The Bishop was attended by the Rev. Fathers Tubman, O’Connell, Taylor, and Regnault. The ceremony lasted over an hour, and at its conclusion those present contributed £132 towards the cost of the buildings, Bishop Grimes giving £5 ss, and the priests of Timaru £lO 10s. The new church is to be a commodious and well appointed building, and will be a decided acquisition, from an architectual point of view, to the little township of, Bfc. Andrews. The total cost is estimated at £I3OO.
Lord Milner has informed the Transvaal burghers that all receipts for goods obtained will be honoured. Some funny receipts will come to light. Writer remembers going to a farmhouse -oft the line of march to make a friendly call. The house was occupied by a real old fashioned Boer couple, whose English comprised about twelve words. All enquiries for “ skoff ” were met with a sad sh ike of the head, and the poor old man displayed a scrap of paper on which was written, “ Received fifty pounds of butter and twelve chickens.’' No more. The aged couple wt re somewhat dubious as to the value of the paper as compared with the actual presence of the butter and chickens, but the present writer assured them as well as ho was able that the receipt was as good as gold. Now, without meaning it, he has become a prophet.
