Waitaki Licensing Committee.

The quarterly meeting of the ■Waitaki Licensing Committee was held on Tuesday, there being present. —■ Major Keddell, S.M. (chairman) and Messrs G. Miller and A. Garter.

The only business was the question of the Pukaki hotel license. This had been granted in June last subject to repairs being carried out before December. These had not been attended to, but as the Government Tourist Department had taken the house over and intended to thoroughly renovate it, the license was not taken away.

The chairman said that it had been reported to him by the police that a certain hotel in Wairaale carried on a considerable amount of Sunday trading, men being seen hanging round there all Sunday. The publicans should have received a good enough lesson at the recent licensing poll, that if they wished the trade to exist, they must conduct their houses strictly in accordance with the law. He could promise any hotelkeeper, brought before him and proved to have been guilty of Sunday trading, the full penalty allowed and an endorsement on his license. The police are determined that if the Sunday trading at this particular hotel is not stopped they will oppose the granting of a license in June next.
