Small Birds.

The question of small biros was brought up at Tuesday’s meeting of the County Council, and was left to the incoming Council, and cheques passed for the payment of eggs were held back. Mr Studholme pointed out the necessity of keeping up the supply of poisoned grain. The Clerk said that the grain which had been lately put out had only half the quantity of strychnine (2)>oz to the bag), and this had been far more successful than that into which a larger quantity was placed. Mr Walker asked if any tests bad been made as to the efficiency of the poison. Sparrows would not take it, although other birds would. The Chairman said he could not ’get sparrows, but he could get every other kind.

Mr Studholme pointed out that as the result of his experience, ten hen sparrows were killed to one cock sparrow. The latter appeared more able to withstand it.

It was stated that poisoned pollard was successful, and the Engineer was instructed to try this and other methods, and experiment with it.
