Acclimatisation Society

A meeting of the Waimato jbranch of the Waitaki am) Waimate Acclimatisation Society was held on Monday evening; present — ‘Mr J. Adams (president, in -he chair), Vice-presidents (Jim n- -

and K. Smith, and Messrs II: !. o'. Smith, B. Flynn, and .1. • ■secretary). The outward and inward correspondence was read and received.

A letter was received from the Canterbury acclimatisation Society asking the Society to send delegates to the meeting to be held in Christchurch on November 12 to form an acclimatisation society for the whole of New Zealand. It was resolved that two delegates should be sent, and that the sum of £5 be voted to defray expenses.

The Colonial Secretary wrote covering the appointment of Mr Cheverton as ranger.

A letter was received from Mr T. E. Donne, Superintendent of the Tourist and Health Department, thanking the Society for the donation of £25 towards importing game. It is proposed to distribute any game imported in the most suitable locality for acclimatisation, and later, when increased in numbers, to distribute as far as [possible among socities contributing. Replies from Mr Ayson, Inspector of Fisheries, in answer to letters sent from the Society in regard to the netting of fish, also acknowledging receiving the crab sent for examination, were read. Several letters were received from the Hon. W. J. Steward and the Government in regard to deer licenses.

After a good deal of discussion it was decided to leave the matter in the hands of the president and secretary to deal with and report again.

It was resolved to place on record the Society’s appreciation of the help that they had received from the Hon. W. J. Steward at all times, and that a letter of thanks should be forwarded to him.

The new Act was read over, and its provisions discussed. It does not give anyone the right to fish [without a license in any waters on Ibis land unless they are entirely !within his land. A license must Ibe taken out to fish in streams running into and out of the land, so that anyone found fishing without a license makes himself liable to be prosecuted for so doing. Accounts amounting to £5 were passed for payment, and a hearty vote of thanks was passed to the president for presiding.
