Waimate County Council.

On Tuesday, after the business had been concluded it was intimated that this was probably the last occasion on which the present Councillors would sit.

Mr stated that he would not be seeking re-elec-tion, and said he wished to thank the chairman and members for their courtesy during his term of office.

Mr Rhodes said that, as the oldest Councillor present he wished to express his very high opinion of the work done by Douglas as chairman, he having shown energy, business acumen and tact in keeping the Council together. They had got through their business quickly, and had yet been able to air their views. He hoped that Mr Douglas would be returned to the Council and that if he were he would be elected chairman. He himself had known a good many members and thought that if Mr Douglas were not returned it would be a loss to the county. There might be as good men as Mr Douglas, but they had not yet come forward.

- Mr Milne also said ho would r not seek ie-election, and thanked ’ the council for the consideration . always shown membei’S. • Mr Walker and Mp Ross endorsed what had been said about the chairman. They had all been treated with the utmost consideration. Mr Douglas thanked members for their complimentary remarks. He had no idea they were going to praise up anything he had done. He had had a most orderly council to deal with, and to this was due most of the credit. He had had no previous experience as chairman and had rceived great assistance from the older members. He did not himself think he was a good chairman ; he was not a good speaker, but he had always striven to do his best. It had been a pleasure and an education to him to sit at their head. Any differences they might have had were never carried further than the table. He heartily thanked them for the complimentary remarks they had made. He hoped most of them, if not all, would be returned.
