School Committee.
The monthly meeting of the ochool Committee was held on Wednesday evening, Mr Hamilton presiding, and there being also present Messrs Mathias, Scott, Jackson, Batcher, Colville and Smith.
The Headmaster reported the roll number to be 480, and the average attendance 427. The Truant Officer h'-ffi obtained four convictions against parents for irregular attendance of children. He enclosed a cheque for £3l 17s, being the net proceeds of the school concert. The sum of £4 had been paid for stationery. The annual examination of the school would commence on November 17, and it would be necessary to make arrangements for closing the school. There were a number of cases of scarletiua in the district and it might affect the attendance later on. High School and Bible prizes would be given at the same time as the others. He suggested thaf the annual school sports should be held as soon as possible after the school examination.
The question of closing the school was discussed, and as the strawberry crop was likely to be late it was resolved to close on December 11. The chairman and Messrs Dean and Mathias were appointed to alter the date if necessary.
The prize giving*- ceremony is to be held in the Odefellows’ Hall. Mrs Hamilton is to be asked to present the prizes The pupils’ part of the programme is to be left to the teachers.
The annual school sports are to bo held on December 4, in Victoria Park. Messrs Mathias, Scott and Hamilton were appointed to assist the teachers in arranging for the spoits. Misses Hare and Williams are to be asked to judge the sewing for prizes. It was resolved to apply to the Education Board to have the drain in front of the school put in order. The Secretary to the High School Board wrote re erecting a gymnasium for the school, and asking the committee to appoint delegates to confer with the Board’s committee.
Messrs Hamilton, Scott, Dean, Colville and Mathias were appointed delegates.
A circular was read from the Timaru Main School Committee, asking the Committee to try and gain the support of candidates at the General Election in obtaining increased incidental grants. The committee decided to get the prizes from Mr H. Franklin, Messrs Hamilton and Pitcaithly to choose the books. Mr Mathias for the visitors reported everything right except a few minor repairs.
Messrs Colville and Jackson were appointed visitors for the month, and the passing of accounts amounting to £4 3s brought the meeting to a close.
