THE WAIMATE ADVERTISER THURSDAY, OCTOBER 30, 1902. WAIMATE'S LIGHTING.
No doubt it will be a genuine disappointment to many people to know that the scheme for lighting Waimate by means of water gas has fallen through. For ourselves we have all along held the opinion that iie Borough Council made far too much ado about accepting the scheme. They stood to lose absolutely nothing, and Mr Watt was bound to put in a good light or he would not secure the custom that 'would enable him to make his venture a paying one. He should at least have had a further opportunity of completing the contract, which lapsed through the miscarrying of certain business arrangements he had made. Then if he did not come up to the mark in a reasonable time the town could have cast round for another method of lighting—one that would provide motive power. Although kerosene has been greatly reduced in cost of late it is far from a desirable light, and now that the question of a better has been so. long in abeyance people are less likely to be content with the old system. Something; must be done and that shortly, but we think it will be a long time ere the town will receive another ofier of something for nothing.
