ASHBURTON STOCK SALE
Ashburton, October 28,
The sale at the Ashburton yards was well attended. In cattle 21 head were entered, and in, sheep 2000, mostly stores. There was good competition for cattle, which sold well. The fat sheep were a fine lot, and butchers' lines sold freely, one fat wether fetching 235. The following are piices :
Cattle—Heifers, £6 7a 6d, £6 17s 6d, £1 15s to £9 2s 6d ; steers, £6 15s; cows up to £8 17s 6d.
Sheep—Fat crossbred ewes up to 19s 6d ; four, six and eight tooths, 17s 6d ; store ewes with lamb* all counted t 7s lOd ; crossbred ewes with lambs all counted, 7s 8d to 9s sd; hoggets, 10s 6d to 12s 7d.

There was a fairly large entry of stock and a good attendance. Prices for all classes of fats again ruled high. In the store sheep pens there were only 936 offered, moat of which were wethers, for which there was a good sale. The following are prices : Sheep -120 wethers made 16s lOd, and 327 brought 14s Id; 29 hoggdts, 13a 3d ; 100 ewes and lambs, 8s 3d ; small lots, 6s lid to 7s 4d all counted. The number of fat lambß showed an horease, 229 being offered, and they met with a good demand, the export buyers operating for the first fir'ie this season and taking a few at 16s 3d to 17s 2d. Prime sorts made 15s to 17s 6d ; extra, 18s to 20s 3d ; and light, 9s 6d to 14s 6d. There was a large entry of fat sheep and the market opened well.
Cattle—The supply of beef comprised 172 head, being mostly of prime quality, there being fewer rough sorts of cown than usual. There was good competition throughout the sale and values ruled ab 80s to 37s 6d per 1001 b«. Five steers from Highfield Station made £l2 12s 6d to £l4 2s 6d ; one heifer £ll, and one cow £lO 15s; and from Mr A. W. Rutherford, Brookdale, 11 heifers, £8 15s to £9 10s; other steers brought £7 to £l3 15s ; heifers, £7 to £lO 7s 6d ; cows, £5 5s to £lO 15s ; and extra to £ll 10s.
Pigi—There was a fairly Urge yarding of pigs and outside competition agaia caused a further rise in values. Baconera made 45s to 70s, equal to 5d to s£d per Ih ; porkers, 28s to 40s, equal to 6i to 6^d; laige stores, 18s to 25a 6d ; medium, 12s 6d to 17s 6d ; and suckera and weaoers, 63 to 12s.
