The Worthington Trial.
Melbourne, October 28. Worthington complained that he was unable to procure important papers owing to the church authorities in Sydney refusing to surrender them. Amongst certain moneys he received were the proceeds of the sale of the Temple of Truth at Christchurch. Counsel for the defence contended that the evidence showed that Madame Juveny gave the money towards the work, wherein her whole soul centred, and it was to be spent in a cause in which both she and Worthington were interested. Counsel for the prosecution, on the strenth of expert evidence, characterised some of the letters relating to the fortune Worthington alleged his aunt had left him as forgeries. The Judge, in a very lengthy summing up against Worthington, was especially severe on the representations he had made to Madame Juveny in reference to the alleged fortune left to him by an aunt, with a view of inducing an advance of money. His Honour scathingly condemned Worthington for al- ' lowing his counsel to insinuate that Madame Juveny induced him to leave his wife for certain purposes, to insinuate in effect that " she bought my embraces with all her property." His Honour characterised some of the accused's explanations regarding the correspondence as unintelligible. Worthington was found guilty on four counts of obtaining Madame Juvany's money under false pretences, and was remanded for sentence.
