THE WAIMATE ADVERTISER TUESDAY, OCTOBER 7, 1902.
Dr Leyda has organised a reception to the Boer generals at Paris. His Majesty the King is to return to London on Saturday, the 17th inst. A German publisher has purchased General Do Wet’s book on the war for £IO,OOO.
Mr Seddon is liktuy to be opposed for Westland. The shearers’ dispute has bea i amicably settled. The present ses-jon of P»rliameut closed on Friday night. After the horse parade on Saturday Mr Davie's Clydeside was put up to auction and passed in at 125 guineas. Owing to the horse parade on Saturday the meeting of tbe Waimate Racing Club was postponed. Waimate was exceptionally busy on Saturday, The main street was crowded with people, and all the business places report increased trade. Mr A. S. Jones’ new buildings, Coronation House, square up the main street and help to give the centre of the town a substantial looking appearance. The advance of spring is marked already by the industry the little town i sparrows are showing everywhere in building their homes, and that of the small buy in commencing his annual harvest of eggs, Mr S. Boreham .informs us that he will give a definite reply to those electors who wish him to contest the election. and have offered him financial assistance, in the course of a few da>s. Net piactice will be held in the Park on Thursday next at three, o’clock- Members and intending members are invited to attend. The opening day has been fixed for Thursday. the 16th instant, when sides will be chosen on the ground. Herr Andrea Andras Vandarmerwe, writing in the “Johannesburg Leader,” says that the Generals’ appeal ought to have been accompanied by a statemerit showing wbut has become of the vast sum in bullion and gold taken out of the country by Mr Kruger. Arrangements are being made to give a civic reception to Mr Seddon on his arrival in Wellington. The Mayor, being assured that the demonstration would have no political significance, has acceded to the request of a deputation to call a public meeting. A good deal of criticism has been evoked in town over the action of the Justices in sentencing the young man Lane to a month for stealing a £1 note. The affair is generally described as a practical joke carried too far, and public opinion is that a severe reprimand would have met the ends of justice. However, there is no appeal. On Friday evening the Hook bachelors gave a very enjoyable dance in the schoolroom, a largo number accepting their invitation. The flooi\ was in good condition, and excellent music was provided by Messrs Saunders and Wilson, so that the time passed away merrily till 3 a.m. Mr Felix Andrews made a capable M.C. The committee worked hard to make the evening the success it was. Refreshments were supplied by Mr W. D. Mitchell, of Waimate, and handed round by the bachelors. Those popular entertainers the well known Black Family are booked to open in the Oddfellows' Hall on the 15th instant and will no doubt as they deserve be greeted by a packed house. The Family consists of six members who are everything possible in the musical line. There is not a better known nor a more clever family of musicians in New Zealand than the Black Family and as soloists on all well known instruments this clever family cannot be excelled and Miss Nellie Vaughan Black, who was at the head of the list at the Trinity College examinations is a splendid contralto, violinist etc., and has also added trick violin playing to her already numerous accomplishments, and her imitations are most excellent ; she imitates the German concertina, bag pipes, church organ, trombone, solo in a small brass hand and a duet between two violins. The abilities of the rest of the family are too numerous to mention and as their first class entertainments are free from vulgarity and deservedly popular, the performances of the Black 1‘ amily are are always enthusiastically received. Mr A. Baker, painter, Queen Street, Waimate, who has been entrusted with the painting and decorating at Coronation House for Mr Arthur Jones, put up a record in the glazing line last Thursday afternoon by filling in the whole of the front glass in the halfholiday. with plenty of time to spare. Considering the half gale of wind that was blowing and the v ery cramped up position of the work, the performance is considered on all hands as a most creditable one. The superficial measurement of the glass was between four and five hundred feet and the weight nearly three-quarters of a ton. We are credibly informed that Mr Baker was the only one in Waimate who would undertake the job. The work done throughout the building reflects great credit on Mr Baker and should be eminently|satisfactory to the gentleman employing him. The internal fittings and capabilities for carrying on the business will receive our attention later on, when in full working order. Synopsis of New Advertisements.
