THE GENERAL ELECTION.

The Dunedin Star’s well-informed Wellington Parliamentary correspondent says There is every reason to anticipate that General Election will he held early in the third week in November, probably on the 15th. Three years ago the session closed on October 23rd, and polling day was fixed for December sth—forty-three days thereafter. If the present session comes to an end on Thursday, and forty-three days are again allowed, that will take us up to November 15th —that is, the date at present arranged. The question was raised by Mr Hornsby on Tuesday at the Government Caucus. The Acting-Premier replied that it would not do for the date to be made public at present, but it would be in November. Members protested against a long campaign, and on being pressed on the pcint Sir J. G. Ward intimated for the information of members that November 15th would be the probable date of the General Election.” SMALL BIRDS. At last meeting of the Levels County Council a conversation took place about small birds, and several members complained about the little results they saw from the use of poisoned wheat. The use of phospborised shelled oats, or of phospborised pollard was suggested. The chairmau thought shooting might be cheaper than poisoning, as one man he knew killed 100 birds with three shots. Ha bad got them together by feeding them. Another member said that might be done once, but it could not be repeated. The birds are too cunning.
