DAY LABOUR V. CONTRACT.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —I see by the Council meeting on Wednesday, S-n ember 25, that the question of Day Labour v. Contract was discussed, the result, being that the day labour got preference, only Messrs Walker and Ross, the t\v i members who look after the small ratepayers’ interest, voting against day labour. I think these two m-mibcs dn wrr» the greatest credit for their staid agiin-t this piece of imposition. It »e«na a very strange idea for the Engineer to go to the North Island for men to repair bridges, unless they are dear relations, because there are just as c irnpetent in this district or perhaps better men than in the North Island. Why not call tenders and let these compe’ent North Islanders have a chance. Tney could no-, come here and do the work cheaper unless times are very hard at home. These n w ulen will-have fine time if th • Ci'i-io:l find them a horse and trap to drive an mt with. The Engineer said at the tu-eti g that it wag impossible to tit how much material was required to repaithr.-io bridges until they were dismantled. Thi t is a very lame nxcu-e, b-canse ,n too tende-s there are schedule prices, piles bring driven at so much per foot and oth<-r timber so much per super foot nr hundred feet, so that extra work is ve v easily worked out. Another tiring with diy labour, the council has to find phot, etc. In my opinion local men are more untitled to the work 'hin stringer--, a> i the money would stay in the district, if i hey had it. Mrßremner ah-n'd have brought a few ratepayers from me s mi: pi c i as he got the bri Ige men. Thanking you for your space, I am, etc , Ratepayer.
