The connection across the Fv r had with Broderick'.cun mg has been ma l« by the Council’? men, and the line is now open for wheel trailic. The repairs to BrodaickV culling are on the point of completion, a few days' work only remaining to be ,on !. Contract No. 411, Dale lew ro.ul, .iii.s been taken over on neh-tlf of the Council and the final payment pa sc 1 in favour of the contractor. A dram through Johnstone’s estate has bean completed, the manager, after an ex unination and explain'ion of the circums' aims mi the ground, having consented to the original proposals being given till ct to. Contract | No. 434, But,ray’s road, has been adverti-cd and provides for tvgraling the cutting into the Hook river and metalling a long! It of 17 chains. Tenders fur this work Ms >d yesterday. Labour was employed bui ding a breastwork to preserve the crossing at Upper Hook and is now engaged on similar work at Her.slot’s and Ad,.m’s creek eroding*. Deep Creek K.d ng—The following applications have received attention during the month:—Geo. M uichcster’s for repairs to Hunt's road, dismantling Ivimt 1 ingiy Bade bridge and substituting a fordway j pr aecling the abutment and brink of the \V aimate creek bridge, Wiiimate Smith Road. Buckingham's application fur diverting drainage and readjustment of ioml drains at j Ham aton. Mills’ application, contract No. 423, Timaru road. The original contrite!, with additions atuhuriaed by the member for the riding was finished in the middle of the month, and is an extension of thn footway down to and including Mr Milsoin s frontage, and widening Hie cm (way for the same distance. Estimates are furnished herewith for the following applications, which were befoie the Council at its last sitting:—LindsaySouthern road formation back ofH mnaton settlement ; Fox’s branch road beacn, mo ailing and surface re-formation ; and J. T. Medhcoti’s for draining lagoon on bis Main South Road frontage. In connection with the latter a survey was made showing the relation of the levels of Ins land to those of th 1 natural surface of the road. The lagoons referred to arc due to depression on his ground, and are not in consequence of the road construction. and as the read would not mate-dally benefit by draining off the water, I am unable to recommend the Council to do the work except Mr Mcdliuutt is prepared to pay the cost of it. Mr Low’s application to the Council to pipe drain two footways into a creek through private land would not, in my opinion, serve the purpose so well as meta'ling the crossings themselves, which could probably bo done at a less cost. Mi H. Wright applies for permission to readjust the depth of a drain at Hannaton to get a fall for draining his land. The work would he of no benefit to the road, and 1 am unable to say, without taking levels, if it would lie desirable lo accede to the request, Complai ds are made of traction engines being stopped to water on bridges and culverts, t» the public risk aud inconvenience, and it might he well to caution i ii t m by notification in the press against the practice.
