Glimpses of Glenavy.

(PROM our own correspondent.)

The reception to returned troopers

committee met in the local schoolhouse last Saturday night and decided to hold the reception on Friday night next, 12th September, at 8 p.m. All returned troopers of the Waimate and surrounding districts are invited to be present, and will be welcomed by the committee. I have no doubt the sffair will prove very enjoyable, as a strong and energetic public committee has the affairs of the function in hand and are sparing no pains to make it a success. All returned men will kindlv do so in uniform. As proving that ping pong yet liveth in the country districts, although not now the mode in cities, witness the I success which attended the local ladies' I ping pong tournament here last Thursday ' night. The school wa* nearly full of the 1 devotees of the game and their friends, and, needless to say, all enjoyed themselves thoroughly, some of the elder ganta being surprised at the results of s >me of 1 heir maiden strokes, and the general all roil.id " crosscdness "of the balls when operated upin by prospective " pongars " for the fifsr. time. The local euchre party is always well attended o'i Wednesdays aud Saturdays j and is already quite an institution here. 'lt is high time that some enterprising citizen rose to the occasion and floated a public hall company, as our schoolhouse is b ing pretty well taxed. The North' Ocago Mounted Riflas g> into camp at Eedoastle on October 4>h, and the local members of this contingent are getting things ready for that date. Rain is wanted, and would do a deal of good now the severe frou? have gone. At time of writing there seems every prospect of th -s long-felt need being supplied.
