Theacnual compcti'. ion for the M muted Rifle Bmalum Cnp, presented by Mijir Hiyhurst last year, look place on the Timaru range on Thursday last, when tivo teamj competed, representing the following corps i Studholme, South Can terbury, Geraldine, Mackenzie and Ash burton. The following are the total scores of the respective teams : South Canterbury Mounteds.. 465 Studholme Mounteds 404 Ashburton Mounteds .. .. 390 Mackenzie Mounteds .. .. 354 Geraldine Mounteds .. .. 288

It will be seen by the above that the South Canterbury Mounted Rifles won by one point, the Studholme Mounted RiflvS being a close second. (This cnp was won last year by the Studholme Mounted Rifles). The coadi ions of ilu match wore five shots at 500, GOO and 700 yards, Government scoring and 18 inch bull.

The shooting of the fi>at named teams under the conditions were very good, Some good individual scorns were recorded, viz, at 500 yards Captain Garland and Tropir Lindsay, of the Studiiolme Mounted R'flsa, and Corporal Pindlay, of the South Canterbury Mounted Rifles, put on the possible scores. At other ranges worthy of mention were Corporal FindUy 19 at 600 yard«, and Trooper Lindsay 18 at 700 yards, out of a possible of 20. No doubt the team from the Studholme Mounted Rifl s felt the want of the local range for practice. Through this being closed the members have not had an opportunity for shooting. lam glvi to hear that the range will be opened again in a few days.

Colonel Jowsey expressed himself well satisfied with the appearance mi l drill of the company, Armourer-Sergemt Buckley inapocte I the arms of the Waimate Rifles yesterday and with few exceptions found them in excellent condition.

A meeting of the shooting committee will be held on Friday night, when every member is expected to be present.
