Waimate Fire Brigade.
At the council meeting last evening the committee appointed to deal with the question of £the ,Fire Brigade, handed in \ their report The Fire Brigade met the committee aud put forward, as the conditions on which they were willing to carry on the Brigade: (1) That the old agreement be cancelled and a new one drawn up; (2) That all accounts pass the council, up to the sum of £25 per annum, all over that by special sanction of the Council and Fire Com- 1 mittee; (3) That the Borough Council provide an up-to-date manual engine, es imated Home cost £IOB ; (4) That the Brigade will attend all fires and calls in complete order, the council to have the right to inspect all plant at any time ; (5) That the Borough Council put down fire tanks in various parts of the town, at least one tank per annum, the Fire Brigade Committee and Brigade officers to select site. After hearing the Brigade menbers in support of the above proposals, the committee decided to ascertain from other Boroughs what their managements were. Replies were read from Temuka, Geraldine, Gore, Kaiapoi and Palmerston South, synopsis of which were attached.
The committee again met and made the following recoin I'.endatione: —(1) The council will supplement private donations to make the total £2O per annum, which amount shall be at the absolute disposal of the Brigade ; (2) The Council will pay all accounts for the upkeep of the plank, but the council # sanction must be obtained before any liability is incurred under this heading; (3) The council will pay pumpers’ wages at the rate of pel hour; (4) The Brigade shall render to the council an annual statement of all monies received over and above the proportion of the £2O donated by the Council as mentioned above. These monies shall bo entered immediately on their receipt in a proper book to be kept for the purpose, which book shall be open to inspection by the council or whom they may appoint at any time; (5) The council, having already apportioned the income for this year, and having no surplus, cannot undertake to provide a how engine at present, as there are no funds available, but will recommend the incoming council to meet such expenditure. In the meantime the council will make enquiries as to the most suitable engine for our requirements ; (6) The council approve of the principle of putting down a fir® tank each vear, ’but J cannot bind future councils in the matter. The report was adopted.
