THE WAIMATE ADVERTISER TUESDAY, AUGUST 12, 1902.

The Waimate Choral Society hold a practice to-night. ~ v .Over £2B was collected at the gate of tjhe Victoria Park on Saturday. Yesterday afternoon Troopers Percy Bntler and H. Wilson left for Christchurch qurrantien station. Mr C. B. Bremner, County Engineer, left yesterday for a week’s holiday in the North Island. The Waimate Cadet Corps has Jbean officially accepted and practice with the new rifle is expected' to commence shortly. Arrangements are being made to collest the returned troopers by the Orient. They will be placed in camp for vaccination and isolation.

The Admiralty has been common! gated with in regard to the movements of the Orient, and it is probable that she will be ordered to clear for South Africa direct, Mr J. Stevens, evangelist, preached morning and evening at Knox Church on Sunday to large congregations. The services will be continued throughout

the week. Many hands belptd at placing earth around the roots of the Coronation oak on Saturday. Mr Fuller, however, was the first to think it might be " dry,” and procured a can of water. The experts’ opinion is that the Mount Kembla disaster was caused by heavy falls in the old workings, causing an accumulation of coal dust, which, reaching the naked lights used by the miners, exploded.

Sir Joseph Ward and all his family have set a good example to the people of the colony and have been vaccinated. The outbreak of smallpox on the Orient has caused quite a ran on lymph throughout the colony. The Juvenile Foresters Lodge met 4«4t evening, Bro Julian, G. 8., presiding over a fair attendance of members, Ten members were proposed for initiation, and routine business transacted.

At. St. Patrick's Church on Sunday the Rev. P. Regnault made special reference to the Coronation of His Majesty King Edward VII. and after High Mass had been celebrated a solemn Te Deum was sung in honour of the great event. We notice in several papers mention of a Coronation Ode produced by tha Hon. W. J. Steward, M.H.R. We would bare imagined that the Major would have liked the people in his electorate to read this very excellent effusion, and if so it is»ratber astonishing that he has not sent us a copy for publication. On Saturday nigh* Mr Alf Jones bad the misfortune to meet with an accident. Ha was chapping wood after dark and the head of the axe got entangled' in the clothes line, being thrown back against his head with great force and cutting it badly.

The Imperial Conference, on Sir E. Barton’s motion, resolved that it is desireable that Imperial products should receive preference in all Oovsrnment contracts as against foreign products, the fullest notice being given of the requirements and conditions of tenders.

An obvious error occurred in out report of Mrs Harrison Lee’s address, the amount received by Oamaru from the hotels being made £IOO,OOO instead of £IOOO. The sentence should read correctly, “ Although Oamaru £IOOO from the licensed houses the people spend in liquor £I7,QQQ, making a loss to the community of £16,000, Another mistake occurred in the report of the Ladies’ Benevolent Society, Mrs W. M. Hamilton donating £l, not 10> as stated.

Chaplain-Captain Dutton, speaking at the reception in Caversham Presby. terian Church on Thursday evening, said it was a matter tor great regret that the troopships were so much over, crowded. It was all right for the officers, but as regards the men ths ships were overcrowded, and a great many complaints were made for that reason. Again and again reports were made as to the condition of affairs, (Mr Dutton) was sure that to many officers it was a matter of great pain, hut they could do nothiag to benefit the men. It was freely rumoured in town yesterday that Trooper Hobbs, of the Ninth Contingent, was ill with small* pox. On hearing this we called on Dr Barclay, who kindly gave us the following information :—On Saturday night he saw Hobbs, who was very feverish, with a rash and general symptoms making the case suspiciously like smallpox. However, the typical rash has not developed and it appears to be a case of septic sore throat, probably the result of poor food and bad ventilation on board ship, the illness being more severe than any forms of sore thoats take in this district- The central authorities have been communicated with and bis condition daily reported. The patient is now recovering.
