Presidents of Waimate, boijh Catholic and Protestant, will be; sorry to hear that the Rev. Father Q'Connell received word on Thursday that he is to proceed to Christchureh to-day to take up a position in the Cathedral. Father O'Connel is exceedingly popular in the district, and even the fact that another popular gentleman, Father Aubrey, of Thuaru, takes his place, will not readily reconcile Waimate people to hislo3s.
Sir E. Barton commenting on the Bailv Mail's cablegram of appalling lo3se"s bv the drought, expresses the utmost confidence in the recuperative powers of Australia. He is quite aware of pastorales' difficulties in parts of New South Wales, but deprecates alarmist exaggerations -in order to enable a particular industry to exact concessions from tha Federal Government, regardless of the general interests of the community. Sir E. Copeland, in an optimistic letter to the newspapers, gives full statistics in reply to the sensational statements of the drought in New South Wales from a financial and pastoral staudpoint.
Particulars of a novel scheme wore laid before the Wellington branch of the Amalgamated Society of Carpenters and Joiners on Friday. The Bradford, Hull and Blackpool branches of the society have each formed a separate body for the purpose of enabling batches of the members to combine and teiader for building contracts. In each of the three cities rained a levy was made on the members to provide funds for the use of any batch of its members taking up a contract. The amount borrowed is repaid with interest at the completion of the contract. Provision is made for a sinking fund in case a contract should result in a loss. The system is aaid to have worked most satisfactorily at Home, and steps are being taken to rive it a trial in Wellington. At its last meeting the Wellington brancV o the society decided to make a levy of 2s per member as tho nucleus of a fund for the purposes above indicated. Bishop Stretch, of Newcastle, who recently visited Northern Queensland, writes in his parish paper in reference to black labour in Queensland. He ™ ■—" The Federal Government, with that rare courage which truly mark* great men, fastened upon the uacst harmless and unprotected people with specially. Chinese aw there in thousands, and Japanese also .but it is the Kanaka who must go. These last B e«n singularly inoffensive. Thev work hard at work that no white man should be asked to undertake. Thev are law-abiding, and spend their money where they earn it. These men, many of whom have families, are really good-living poop e 5 but an enlightened Government insists upon the Reporting of the heathen to the Islands; where tbfl chances are they will bo murdered by their still heathen countrymen A more curious and cowardly proceeding l would be hard to imagine. I trust that in jouo way Australia may be spared the scandal it is responsible for. If not. White Australia will have to blush a pretty high-coloured red for very shamo It is curious that no plans deporting Chinese *iid Japanese have been put forward, but it is not hard to B ee the reason. When we wUh to play tho bully, we naturally choouo the «»alloat boy."
