Horticultural Society.

The monthly meeting was held last evening in the Fire Brigade Rooms, the Rev. McKenzie Gibson (President) in the chair and also present Messrs Hargreaves, Scott, Akhurst, Wilson, D. A. Morgan, Nicol, Howard, Taylor and Ravenhall, A letter was received from Mrs Hayes enclosing cheque for £1 10s to be appointed as follows : —los for prizes for best wreaths by girls attending the local schools and 10s for prizes for best wreaths made by adults. Mr Norton Francis wrote thanking the Society for electing him a patron and stating that although business prevented him from taking an active pact- in the Society he would further its interest in any way he could. Mrs S. J. Adams wrote offering £1 for Ist, 2nd and 3rd prizes for sewing, available for both schools and for children who had not passed the Fourth Standard, and also Ist, 2nd and 3rd prizes for mapping for children attending both schools, but who have not passed the Fifth Standard. Mr R. H. Rhodes, Bluecliffs,

wrote enclosing a donation to the funds and thanking the Society for electing him a patron. It was decided to acknowledge

all the letters with thanks. The recommendations of the outgoing committee wero then taken. ‘ It was decided to erect a marquee outside the hall for the poultry and children’s pets. A long discussion took place on question of prices offered for cottage gardens, but the present difficulties seem too great to allow a fair contest. The idea was to encourage the

It was ultimately decided to strike the cottage competitions out. It was decided that all entries in poultry be for single birds. It was decided to give no first prize unless there are two entries, no second unless three, no third unless four, giving the judges no option of making an award where there are too few entries. If an entry is of sufficient merit, but the • entries are not numerous enough, n “ specially commended ” ticket would be awarded. It was decided to Lave the section for ferns open to those other than New Zealand. It was decided to confine children’js competitions to the Waimate County. Exhibitors when removing exhibits will henceforward have to produce a duplicate list. The following were appointed to revise the schedule :—Horticulture : Messrs Howard, Akhurst and Dean. Poultry and children’s pets : Messrs Reilly, Lundon, Saundois and Taylor. Special and children’s prizes and extra exhibits : Messrs McGowan, Nicol, Smith and Hargreaves. Needle and fancywork : Mesdames Rowse, Adams, Smith and Scott. The sub-com-mit tees report at a meeting to be held in a fortnight. It was decided to write to the Traders’ Association asking for special prizes for the Society.
