Coronation Celebrations.
London, June 18.
The Nationalist members of the House of Commons have resolved that, owing to the misgovernment of Ireland, they will not participate in the Coronation celebrations, but will meet in Dublin on June 26th to consider the condition of Ireland.
West End tradesmen, to cover themselves against possible loss, are heavily insuring the life of the King since His Majesty suffered the attack of lumbago. Lloyds are 'charging twenty guineas to insure that the Coronation procession takes place before the end of July. The previous rate was four guineas. Seventy thousand troops will lino the streets of London on Coronation Day. Continental and English detectives are co-operating to prevent an influx of Anarchists to England during the Coronation festivities. A number have quitted Zurich and Geneva, and have been traced to Paris, awaiting the opportunity to cross the Channel. His Worship the Mayor has received a telegram from the Acting Minister of Defence (Hon. Hall-Jones), stating that if the medals for the Waimate returned troopers have arrived in the colony he will arrange for them to be presented in Waimate on Coronation Day, and asked that the Mayor make the presentation.
From advertisement it will bo
seen that an effort is ’■'.eing made to get together a band for Coronation Day, as the local band has been somewhat disorganised of late. It is to be hoped that a good number of players will assist the movement.
A general committee meeting of the Coronation Celebrations was held on Thursday evening, His Worship the Mayor presiding. The principal business was receiving the reports of subcommittees and arranging other details. The work is well in ban I, and a good day is anticipated. Although the first item on the programme is timed for 10 a.m,, it has since been arranged that the first processions form up at the drillshed at 9.30, thence coming through John street into High and Queen streets to the Borough Council, whe e the flag will be saluted. It is tho intention of the Waimate Masons to hold a Coronation service in the Oddfellows’ Hall on Sunday, 29th inst. A collection will be taken up, and the proceeds will be handed to the Ladies’ Benevolent Society. At a meeting of settlers held at Morven on Wednesday evening, the Rev. J. Watt in the chair, it was resolved to hold a Coronation celebration at Morven. A committee was appointed, with Mr Wells as secretary and the Rev. J. Watt as treasurer.
