Gum, on Tuesday, Colmmn and Petit, Gill, a 9 was in default fourteen days, the detectives seized a man mined Edward after ward-; committed cell by means of poison the cavity of his cork leg. According to the Tim.mi Post, a private telegram received from Auckland on Situ: day state;; that the American flour recently imported there is a failure, and the b ikers decline to take delivery of it. W. Avery Smith, an American, has for nine years been swindling numerous families in Loudon by means of bonds offered as security with a promts of being redeemable in half n year, but it has been discovered that they are redeemable in 500 years. Sister Elinor’s lecture on “ The Dear Homeland ” was well attended last evening in the Oddfellows’ Hall, and was an immense success. At the close a vote of thanks to the lecturer was passed on the motion of His Worship the Mayor and Mr Graham. Daring the evening Miss Layton sang “ On the Rocks,” “ The Old Countree, ’’ and “ Daddy.”
Mr Spreckels has arranged for a mail boat to Igave Sydney every third Monday, commencing with the Ventura on June 23rd ; leave Auckland the following Friday, and arrive at San Francisco in twenty-one days, and thus enable the mails to be delivered in London in thirty-one or thirty-two .days.
1 This afternoon, what should prove a very interesting football match takes place, when the Waimate club will meet a local team. Players are requested to attend as it behoves them to be lit for the match on 3rd Tune, when they play against the Temuka team. Arrangements are being made for a match between the Timaru Star second fifteen and the local club’s second fifteen to be played at Waimate shortly.
The committee presided over by General Akers Douglas condemns the entire system of army educaton at Sandhurst, which should be re-mod-delled and the course fixed for two years at a cost of £ll2 instead of JllsO. There should be only one examination for candidates at Woolich and Sandhurst, or for the militia. Fifty commissions should be granted yearly for students from the colonies and a hundred for university candidates, A dismounted parade of the Stqd= holme Mounted Rifles was held on Tuesday evening, Captain Garland-in command. About forty were present, and Staff Sergeant-Major Crespin put the men through the manual and firing exercise with the new rifle. The printed programmes for sports to be held during the local camp in October were handed out, so as to give the men ample time for practice. A meeting of the social committee was held after parade, and everything was ascertained to be in readiness for the social to-night, which promises to be a big success. The Lords of the Admiralty witnessed an impressive experiment at Barrow-in-Furness. A 6 inch gun wis fitted with Johnson’s oap, similar to those used in the French, Russian, Gorman, and American navies, and the shot perforated a 6 inch Krupp plate and its backing, whilst an uncapped shot failed to perforate. The capped shot also penetrated a 12-ineh plate, remaining fixed in the backing. The Times says that the experiment shows the necessity for an immediate improvement of secondary armaments. The “ Daily Telegraph,” in dealing with the Imperial Conference, says:— “ It is evident that the Imperialists will, at any price, make an effort to drag the colonies into a permanent defence service of the Empire, and that some Premiers are quite ready to bo so rqade use of is more than probable. Aparenly there are no limits to what Mr Seddon will gladly do in the way of sword drawing, and converting the men of New Zealand into conscripts of the Empire. Mr Barton may take fire by contact with the blaze, together with those with him. He deliberately rendered himself unrepresentative of the Commonwealth by refusing to divulge his views on this and other important questions.” According to a London paper, the “ Auld Brig o’ Ayr,’ - famous through half the world, is in danger— not from the hand of the vandal, but from the band of time. A report as to its condition, which has been prepared by the Ayrburgh surveyor, slates that the heavy floods of the past year haye. made sqriouis inroads upon the stability of its foundations, particularly w|tq regard to the south pier, and various other defects have manifested themselves. The Town Council has decided to place the repair of the structure in the hands of some contractor of large experience of working under water, so that, while everything may be made secure, the “ auld brig ” may still be
preserved. The Australian outlaws are still being pursued by the police. A report from Mitchell and party of police states that they surprised the KennUß on Friday camped on the edge of some big scrub, and almost cordoned them. The fugitives espied the party, and escaped to the busb, where the black tracker was unable to follow. The party captured the horses saddles and a quantity of ammunition. Subsequently two horses were stolen in the district. The Kenniffs shoe one horse just as the police came up. The captured horses are those in connection with which Dalke and Doyle were pursuing the Kenniffs. Besides a large quantity cf revolver and rifle cartridges, the police scoured i* number of ruddles, bridles, and 4 stock of food*
The award of the Aihi trillion Court in the grocery dispute says as to the request that the Court sh mid limit (he number of youths to b° employed jo grocer’s shops, that the Court knew 0 { °no sufficient reason which could justifyit in so doing. It was the Court’s duty to see that the avenues for suitable work were not closed to the youth 0 { the colony. In practically ever; occupation the regulation of which had been submitted to the Court it had been asked to exclude youths beyond . the limited proportion to adults employed. That proportion was generally stated at either one youth to three adults employed, or one south to four. Thoughtful working men must recognise that if these boys wove debarred from obtaining suitable gmployment in trades from which there was no natural right for their exclusion a wrong was clone to those boys, and the difficulties surrounding the bringing up of a family wore very much increased. The interests of the colony demanded that there must bn no improper shutting out from legitimate means of earning a livelihood of the youth of the colony, and the Court thought it was amply justified, in the interests of the working classes themgelves, in again emphasising this principle.
