Coronation Celebrations.
MEETING AT WAIMATE. A meeting was held in the Borough Council Chambers on Thursday evening, present—His Worship the Mayor in the chair, and Crs. Sinclair, Inkster, Nicol and Barclay. Mr Walker was also present representing the County Council.
The Mayor announced that the business of the meeting was to draw up a programme to be transmitted to a public mooting. A long discussion then ensued.
Cr. Sinclair thought a service the first thing. Cr. Inkster thought this should be a united religious stu-vic*. He moved that a united religious service lie held in th i drill,shed, or if fine outside, an I th it ministers of all denominations b"> asked to draw up (he order of service, also that an invitation be given to volunteers. Nicol, the mover thought comm mi intive treeolanting should b 1 the next thing, and after that sports for the children. If the programme of the Jubilee could lie g me through it would be very suitable.—The motion was carried.
The Mayor said hn had looked up the Act and found it was illegal for the Council to give money, fie had received no communication on the subject. He thought it ridiculous that members of local bodies should be liable for monies voted. It was not clear whether the amount would be refunded.
It was decided to plant trees in the triangle on Victoria Terrace, the Chairman of the County Council and Mayor to he asked to speak. The Mayor was of opinion that ample funds could bo raised by subscription, and that admission to the sports grounds could bo charged. Mr Walker’s suggestion that the school ehilarcn bo asked to canvass was made a recommendation to the public mooting.
A recommendation is to bo made to the public meeting that a luncheon be given to the children and old age pensioners in the Park and the keeping of a booth be tendered for, and that a reprosenta-' tive committee make arrangements. During discussion as to whether sports should bo hold, Mr Walker said he thought that could bo left to the committee appointed by the public meeting.
It was suggested that a seven-a-side football match be hold. It was decided to hold the public mooting on Friday, 30th insfc., at S p.m.
