Education Board.
The South Canterbury Education Board met on Thursday and the follow- • ing business of local interest was transacted. The chairman stated that the Waikakahi school would be opened on Monday next, with Miss McKenzie as teacher. Miss Jessie Fyfe had resigned Kapua on accepting Otaio; and Miss Smart, Waitohi, on accepting an appointment at Waimate. The Hakataramea Committee asked whether the Board proposes to do anything in the matter of sewing mistrees. There are 26 girls at the school, ann if sewing is not taught it will mean a considerable loss to them.—Members all round the table said this was a very important matter, as important as Technical education—was in fact Technical Education —and it was resolved—- " That the Board, in view of the frequen urgent applications for sewing mistresses, earnestly press the matter on the attention of the department, strongly suggesting the expedience of reviving the sew. ing mistress schome." The stcretary Glenayy Committee wrote on February 25th, asking for a relieving teacher from March 3rd to 25th. Also that the committee wish the Board to understand that no correspondence frommembera of the school committee was to be considered official unless signed by the secretary. . The architect reported on the Waitaki School'which has been lately removed. He stated that the floor required repairing and not renewing wholly as suggested by the committee. The Commissioner ot Crown Land wrote re sites for schools at Waikakahi stating that the Board’s propoeitior would be laid before tbs Land Board; A 1 later letter stated that the Land Board had considered the Board’s request foi I new sites, and recommended that they I be granted, and rights of way thereto, on J condition that this Board gives up its preset sites in this locality to the Crown. —Mr Barclay pointed out that they were asked (o giva up twenty acres for two acres. He moved that the Land Board be asked to allow the matter to stand over for a time. The secretary to the Waimate High School Board of Governors notified that the term for which Dr Barclay had been elected a Governor as representative of this Board expires on March 31st.—Dr Barclay was reappointed. There was only one application for the Kapua teaohership, and it was decided to appoint the applicant locum tenens. Morven reminded the Board that the blinds for the now addition had not yet been supplied, and the stone step at the door, being a foot high, was dangerous. —Referred to Building Committee. The Rev. The permanent charges would nhsmb ihs fallowing sums Architect’s fees, £l5O ; school furniture, £100: painting, £150; contingencies, £000; 1 caving a lailurne of Tender* for v.rijus building repairs and improvements hid been received, and the committee recommended the acceptance af the lowest in each case. These were Waituna additions, Mr Black, £135; Waimate partition, Mr Batten, £29 10s. The committee further recommended that additions asked for at Esk Valley "be held over for the present. The architect is to report on additional room at Waimate, on ventilation asked for at Makikihi. and on a request for another room at Glenavy. The following works wore also recommended :—Waitaki village, fencing. The report was adopted.
