Cricket.
The fifth test match between ’the Englishmen and the Australians commenced on Friday. There were two new men in the Australian team — Kady and Travers —who took the places of Saunders (who had a fractured shoulder blade) and Howell. The Australians won the toss, and decided to bat. They opened fairly well, the first four men making 90 runs, but disaster followed. The innings closed for 144 runs. At the call of lime the English team had put together 133 for the loss of fi vo wickets. Next morning the balance of the team were disposed of, the whole side compiling 189 runs. The Australians’ second aitempt was better than the first, Hill in particular giving a splendid display, Following are the scores :
