New Zealanders Lose
Heavily
\Veixi\c-ton, February 28
The Premier bud received die following cable from Mi- LMclier, of Capetown, who in turn received it from Colonel Porter ;
"A regiment on duty has reported a severe engagement 'with heavy losses to the Cevemh Few Zealand Contingent. At 'midnight on the 2:>rd upwards of 800 Boers, under ]JL. Botha, Burs and Albert, broke through tho driving cordon line of culpo-Ms at a point held by 100 (?) of die left wing. Under cover of a thourami head of cattle, the enemy nnuied the position in overwhelming force, desperately irresistible and boid. Our men, in the shelter trenches, bravely and gallantly resisted the onslaught, as "evidenced -by the 50 casualties, all in tho trenches — killed 21 and wounded 27. The Boors, loss was heavy. Thera were many instances of heroism, and'not one skulker is leported. 11l fully maintained bravely the reputation of Flew Zealand’s soldiers, ami that is the only solatium I can oll’er their relatives. Particulars of casualties, later.—Pilcher.”
I deeply regret to have to convey this sad news. It will cast a gloom over the colony, and there wiil be a great deal of uncertainty and painful anxiety amongst patents and relatives of our brave sons at the front to know Whether theirs are amongst the fallen. 1 have cabled to Major Pilcher lo obtain details as tpiickly as possible, so as to r-.-oe e the anxiety and tension. it.
