Everyone who has visited the Fat East wonders at the magnificence d the European settlement at Shanghai,! Its cathedrals and churches, its Cus* tom-house and Town Hall, its dubs, and other features of interest fill everf traveller with astonishment. It has i •fair theatre in the Lyceum, built as; far back as 1874. Its Cus*cm-house-ijs a fine building, in Tudor st)le; fronting on the Bund and the Hankow*' road, while the Town Hall and the Public Markets, completed recenfy, would do credit to any European: dty. The principal s'de of them fronts the Nanking-road, the main thoroughfare of the English settle* meat. Many of the Chinese have bought houses built according M Western ideas, and have settled do«ni in the European quarter.
