The De Wets, like the Kiugers and Jouberts, are a numerous clan in South Atiica, and ate/as a matter of fact, divided in their allegiance. Two: of the name at least ate of well-; approved loyalty. These are Sit! Jacobus Albeiius De Wet, K CM G*[ ''and B;r Jacobus Petrus De Wet.; Despite the identity of their first' ■Christian names, these two are! brothers. The former was a member! of the Legislative'Council of Capej Colony from 1569 to logo. lie still} li-vi s in Cape Town. Sir Jacobus; Tetrus was educated in England, ans is a B.A. of London Uiiversity and a ! barri-ter of the Inner Temple. For, some time he was Recorder di Giiqualand West, and was subsequenily a Judge in Cape Colony andi Chief Justice of the Transvaal. In 1 SB? 3 he acted as Chief Justice ofc Ceylon. On his retirement he re*' lu-rned to England, and now lives at! Eastbourne. Christian De Wet, the} Boer guerilla general, whose namej has'been on everyone's lips for sonnej time now, has spent the most of hisi well n;gh fifty j ears of life on hist farm, in the Orange River State. His> ability as a leader of men and hisj -fame as a strategist, by none more] frankly acknowledged than by" out great generals at "the front," isj -the more remarkable when his incorri* plete education and total lack ofj miiitary training are 'borne in mindij 'Christian De Wet has a welJ-propof)j tioned figure, and a very pleasant! countenance, which is somewhat marred by weak eyes. {
