Farmers' Union.
At ti meeting of tho Tima.ni branch of the Farmers’ Union on Saturday the small bird question came up, and after some genet’ll discussion it was resolved — “ That this Kxcutiye strongly supports any legislation that will pive extended powers to local bodies to ensure systematic destruction of small birds." The idea approved by the meeting was that the extended legislation should bo in the direction of giving local bodies power to enter upon private lauds for the purpose of laying poison. Mr Masliu said he had been asked to bring no the matter of threshing rates, which iiad l)* j en raised by a Workers’ Union at Waimate. Threshing machine owners about Geraldine had been given notice by the Union that a demand would be'made for an alteration of the system of payment. Drivers, and feeders were to have Is Gd per hour and found, and other hands la au hour and found, and the hours were to be limited to ten and a half actual working hours per day. He did not think la an hour too much if the men found themselves, but it was too much if they were found. At present the men get 8a per 1000 for oats end 9a and 10s per 1000 for wheat. He said that. if the cost of threshing was increased to the mill-owners they must charge the fanners mors for threshing. As there was no: hiug official boU.ro the meeting, it was agreed that nothing very definite could bo done, but it was resolved—“ That in the opinion of this executive the present system of paying threshing’thill hands at per 1000 should continue.”
