The head lU.isterTnported Rs follow* : I'have vh.- hnmmr to make the following renort, on 1 o-j working of the Higo Sciiool fertile mnivh of F.-bi a ,ry ;
The roil I’.uiiiluf of i pci riianen' ly in ihe Hig > Menus', in 53 In addition to this, ac''lrtg o>; 'the ••♦'solution passed by your Uoa, .i, I hav-< all jw ■ i ~vn 4 me brightest cbildivu in Stm.i-.d VI to take up two se™n buy sivij-cts. My roisous for starting the secondary subjects earlier are as fellows :—l. Up to the present time the number of teachers engaged in High School work at any One time has been only one. By the new regulations another tetoher and a pupil teacher have been added to the staff, and this enables me to pht more power into the High School, and so deal with the increased members. 2. I have for a long time fell, that our High School is seriously handicapped w-.en compared With other High Schools, by tlio pupils not commencing certain seconds ry subjects eair li«r in their course. One rc-idt of ilus has been that for the last mx years I have been working from 8.30 a.m. until 4.00 and 5 p.m. in order to eual.l; the Cm; Service and schoUrsh-p c.mdiditOH to overtake (he work iv tUm two years. By starting certain High Solim.i! subjoins in Sianoard VI.. the necessity for this m-h will be obviated. 3. Cena.n subj els in the secondary course can ea.ulv bo negotiated within two years, whilst others require three, and by stan iog the more ditlicult ones earner the various subjects can be kept moie in time 4. Lastly, it will enable us to handle a junior University scholarship candidate* fully a year earlier than We are able to do now.
The Board will see, however, that it is impossible to accommodate .this number in the present Higl Sch.-ol room. I have applied for addithmal High School accommodation, and 1-nnr ule-iaed to state that the Education B >*rd have granted the request. 1 cannot help expressing my gratification m the way in Which the High school h-s grown during the last few years— increasing a* it his done from 11 pupils (only tour of whom wei'o doing four subjects) in 1805, to (54 pupils in T 902. I have to teporfc thift the five candidates who presented • thetriseive« for Matriculation tC’ll passed. Two more pupils, John Handy mid"Juntos Park, have received appointments in Wellington in virtue ot the good position they took in the Oivil Service exathination, and Ethel Simmons has received an appointment as pupil teacher in the school., Gilbert Hayes also passed his solicitors’ general knowledge examination. The report of the annual High School examination has been before the Board of Education, and I am in receipt of a letter of congratulation from that b> ly onkihfehigh quality of the Worksabiinued. It was decided to write to Mr Anfieraon, a tonant at A.lbury, asking if -he were not occupying the Board a .property as had been staled. On the motion of the Rev MvE-mah; Gibson and Mr Coleman, w.v.s resolved, “ That this Hoard learn witu much gratification of the very successful work achieved in the Hign Wunool, and congratulate the head muster and staff upon the matriculation and civil service results.
After a long discussion Ut was resolved, “ That the Board is willing to make provision for a masurium number of fifteen exh.b: tionur.qselected from the Sixth Standard, at the rate of J 62 for each, the former proportion as between tho head UMSiei- and i.’Slrs, master to bo oositryed. in subsequent years the winners are to be selected oft tho basis of compemion."
The chairman of the scholarship committee made several suggestions as to the scholarships proposed to bo established under this Board, and a long discussion took place with regard to tho urea from Winch candidates might be drawn. Considerable, die* cussiontook place. Wits.tha- itf&A ’o include all Houih Canterbury ?.'' Or, was it restricted to the BofougH; and County of Waimate ? The motion, if put, could have been carried for the former, but the chairman declining to settle the matter by his casting .vote, the question is to coma up again at a special meeting.
