Waimate Choral and Orchestral Union.
The annual meeting was held on, Tuesday evening, Dr Barclay (president) presiding over a meeting of about twenty, other meetings being hold on the same evening accounting for the somewhat small attendance. Apologies were received fratn Messrs Scott, Coleman and Evans and the Rev. McKenzie GibsCn. Tne committee presented the following annual report for the second season, 1901 Your committee have again to congraifiate you on a successful year, both irom a musical point of view and financially. We started the year with a credit balance of .£3 18s -Id, and after paying expenses of a long season and also expending £1 14s on staging, which is a permanent asset, the balance-sheet ! shows a balance in hand of j£3 9s Bd, besides which there are outstanding subscriptions amounting -to £2 l*2s 6d. Our financial position, therefore, is satisfactory, although the proceeds _ from the second concert, from which we anticipated a considerable surplus, were only a few shillings over and above the expenses- The honorary members now number twentynine, and 'We wish to take this opportunity of heartily thanking them for their assistance, without which it would d)3 impossible to carry on cur society. The active members have also increased, there being sixty choral and fifteen orchestral members on the roll. The attendances during the year were good, and the interest shown in the work of the society was very gratifying to your committee. Two conceits were given ' during the year, the first consisting of the cantata “ St. Cecilia’s Day,” by J. Van Bree, and several glees, and the second Cowan e 11 Rose Maiden, the latter being the most ambitious piece the society has attempted. The result fully justified the musical Committee in their selection, and the work all round shows that considerable mi proVement has been made during the past year, bud reflected the greatest credit on our conductor (Mr Gold-, stone), to whose efforts the success ol the ■society has been so largely due, and on the rneihbets themselves. The bef(l thanks of the society are also due to Miss AfchUrsfr, the aocompamate, for her untiring devotion to her arduous duties, in conclusion, we wish to thank the members, both choral and . Orchestral, for thqif assistance and hearty co-operation during the past year, tmd trust that the coming season will be even more successful, both musically and financially. It was decided to adjourn the rest of the business, including the 'election of Officers, till Thursday* 27th inst., and in the meantime the present music • committee be empowered to obtain, music for the first concert. If this were obtained in time, a tun through would follow the business at . the adioUrned rheeting. ' ....... t
