Constable O'Halloran went to Christcburch by yesterday's express to appear as a witness in tbe Ariadne case, which commenced yesterday. The Premiers of the Commonwealth of Australia and New Zealand will be Royal guests at the coronation, similar to the visit of Queen Victoria's Jubilee. The Premiers of States will be treated as distinguished personages, Their expenses will not be paid, though their visit will bo made agreeable. The City of London has resolved to present Mr Chamberlain, who is already a Freeman of the City, with an addres enclosed in a suitable gold box, in recognition of his statesmanlike qualities and patriotism in the true interests of the Empire. Much enthusiasm is displayed. In a number of towns in New Zealand, v packed meetings have passed resolutions expressing confidence in Mr Chamberlain.
Me Robert McKay, a very old resident .in this district and one who was much respected, died yesterday at 5 a.m. Mr McKay had been in this district upwards of 40 years having atrived in 1858 in the
ship Strathallan, the Messrs Manchester also arriving, at the same time. Deceased at first settled at Hakatara. l moa. He then built the Eedcliff Hotel, then the Waimate Hotel, and finally about 30 yoars ago took up a farm on the Timaru P»oad which he occupied till a short time ago. Mr; McKay had to contend with a good deal of misfortune in later years. Ho suffered a long severe illness some two years ago, then his house was burned down, and following close came the lingering illness from which he died. The funeral will leave deceased's late residence to-morrow at 2.30 p.m. for the Waimate cemetery;
